OUR HISTORY

On any second and fourth Sunday between April and October you’ll find a group of women loading their golf gear into cars for an hour drive away from Baltimore, Maryland. We are members of the Pitch and Putt Golf Club of Baltimore, a gathering of primarily African American women.

The club was organized in 1938, when few African Americans could play on public golf courses, and certainly not on private courses. In Baltimore, African Americans played at Carroll Park, a city course with just nine holes and sandy greens. During its early years, the club became part of the Eastern District of the United Golf Association. Many happy Sundays were spent riding the road to play in inter-club tournaments with other groups, The Green Ladies in Philadelphia, and in the Washington D.C. area with Wake Robins, Oxon Blades, and the Arlington Divots. As courses opened access, members began to compete in local, state, and national tournaments.

All original members are deceased. However, the passion and love of golf live on in the 30+ active members, who range in age from the 30s to early 80s. We represent the full spectrum of women; working professionals, entrepreneurs, homemakers, retired, single and married.

We are a traveling club, choosing to travel to different courses in the metropolitan areas of Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania for outings.

Membership in the club is by invitation to women who have golfing experience and a passion for actively playing competitive golf. The club is proud of its history and diligently works to ensure members enjoy the camaraderie and pleasure golf offers.
